The Challenge

Vodafone is committed to serving its customers with high-speed, ubiquitous coverage. Many popular holiday destinations in markets served by the operator are in locations with poor terrestrial connectivity options. Seasonal increases in population of several hundred percent are not uncommon.

Historically it has been difficult justifying the operational and capital costs of backhaul infrastructure for such seasonal peaks, which can result in a poor user experience. Such varied backhaul requirements needed a robust and flexible solution.

The Solution

Avanti’s network integration team worked with Vodafone to identify, design and integrate a flexible and cost effective service to deliver additional backhaul capacity to existing sites, and primary connectivity to new sites previously deemed commercially unviable. Designed to provide primary connectivity as well as overspill for traffic during peak times, Avanti’s leading Ka-band satellite technology enables carrier-grade backhaul to be delivered.

Avanti’s cellular backhaul solutions use the latest generation high throughput satellites (HTS), supporting the following use cases:

  • Rural and remote BTS and small cell backhaul
  • Rapid service roll requirements Solution
  • Emergency service restoration and civil contingency
  • Network data services offload/overspill

The Results

Cellular backhaul over satellite has proven to be the smart and cost effective technology when compared to terrestrial backhaul options. Following a series of highly successful trials, Vodafone is using satellite backhaul for both primary connectivity and 3G data overspill from small terrestrial backhaul circuits. Avanti’s IP backhaul product provides flexible bandwidth that can shift throughout Vodafone’s network, meeting network demand as it occurs.
