Avanti's broadband internet service beats the Scottish storms

The storms which hit Scotland earlier in December saw the highest winds since 1986, leaving many thousands without essential utilities.

Avanti is proud to report that fewer than 2% of end user customers in Scotland experienced any form of service deterioration.

The majority of Avanti’s customers in Scotland benefited from the Scottish Government’s Broadband Reach project; an exclusive contract awarded to Avanti in 2008.  The project provided an affordable broadband service to homes and businesses that could not access terrestrial broadband.  Avanti completed over 2400 installations from the Shetlands to the Borders.

David Williams, CEO of Avanti, said: “I am delighted at the success of Avanti’s technology in dealing with these extreme weather conditions.  We have made a significant investment to prioritise the resilience and robustness of our satellite broadband services.   That commitment has been fully justified and represents a significant competitive advantage.”

Alex Neil, Cabinet Secretary for Infrastructure and Capital Investment said: “We are pleased that our partnership with Avanti, through the Broadband Reach Project, has brought broadband to many homes and businesses unable to receive a fixed-line service.

We know that customers rely heavily on their broadband for work, education, entertainment and, particularly at this time of the year, online shopping.  I am delighted that the service withstood the weather and performed when most needed."
