Kent; Install fast net access for free

Canterbury Times

ANYONE struggling without a broadband internet connection in rural areas can now get it installed for free.

Kent County Council has teamed up with Avanti Communications Group to offer installation worth £500 as part of the county's rural broadband plan.

The company is also giving away free equipment to up to 100 homes.

Chief executive David Williams said: "It is estimated that there are as many as 20,000 homes and businesses in Kent unable to get broadband internet, with a vast proportion of these in rural areas.

"Our service, which uses a satellite dish and modem to overcome the need to lay new cables, can provide customers with broadband internet at speeds of up to 10Mbp/s.

"There is no excuse for any family or small business in Kent to be without broadband internet should they want it. Avanti's technology means that wherever someone lives or works, broadband internet is possible.

"Kent County Council is trying hard to solve this problem and we firmly believe that the UK Government should prioritise rural areas most in need of help. The priority should be a universal service obligation to enable every family and business to get broadband at speeds of at least 2Mbp/s if they want it."
