.....a further £5 million will go to another company at Goonhilly - Avanti Communications Group - for the creation of a "broadband satellite teleport", using satellites to carry broadband internet signals. It launched its first satellite last year and is planning a second in 2012.
Goonhilly was the largest satellite earth station of its type in the world. When in operation, its 61 antenna dishes handled thousands of international phone calls, TV broadcasts and data. Andrew George, Liberal Democrat MP for St Ives, said: "This is a real game changer. It will breathe new life into the local economy and gives the UK a competitive edge in what is bound to be a growing technology and an exciting emerging market.
"These projects tick all the right boxes. High-tech and well- paid jobs in an area that desperately needs it, the re-use of Pounds 40 million of otherwise redundant infrastructure, placing the UK at the forefront of an arena of expanding technological and scientific research and development."
