Paul – IT Support Engineer
How long have you been in this role?
I am fairly new to the company and plan to be here for a long time yet!
Did you work within other parts of Avanti prior to Goonhilly?
No, my previous role was for another employer in Bristol.
What are the required qualifications for your role?
Experience is the main requirement for my role, although any IT-related qualifications help.
What’s the best thing about working for Avanti?
Avanti is an excellent company. We are always looking to move forward in all aspects of the work we do – both internally and externally with customers.
What’s the best thing about working at Goonhilly?
The team here is great. Everyone is friendly and willing to help each other out. For me, the best part is the lifestyle change that living in Cornwall brings – not only for me, but my entire family. Evenings and weekends on the most beautiful beaches in the UK, you couldn’t ask for more!
What does an average working day look like at Goonhilly?
Every day is different. At the moment, I am working on different projects for the IT Department. Each day also brings a variety of challenges supporting users, whether that’s an issue with a phone or PC, supporting a colleague using an application, right through to a complete system rebuild. No two days are the same.
What excites you about your future at Goonhilly?
The growth of Goonhilly means that over time, there will be even more challenges. It also means that there are new faces and people to meet and help on a day-to-day basis.
What is the local area like? Did you re-locate or did you live locally?
I relocated for this role, moving from Bristol to Cornwall. The local area is fantastic, I live 10 minutes from a beach, 15 minutes from the most scenic towns around and my commute to work is great.
What would your career advice be to new recruits?
Take every opportunity to learn something new, as each day will bring new knowledge. If you come across something that you don’t know, ask someone who does. Find yourself a mentor to guide you through the learning process. Everyone has had to learn their skills, and there is no better teacher that someone with experience.
