About Goonhilly

Goonhilly holds a unique place in satellite telecommunications history. On 11 July 1962, its ground earth station received the first live transatlantic television broadcast from the USA via the Telstar satellite. On 16 July the first transatlantic telephone call over satellite was made from the UK and the first colour TV pictures were transmitted from Goonhilly to the USA. Kick starting a new chapter of telecoms innovations for the site, Avanti chose Goonhilly to house its state-of-the-art Ka-band Gateway Earth Station.

Life in Cornwall

Cornwall is loved for many things, exotic coastline, captivating fishing harbours, spectacular beaches and pounding waves that provide excellent surfing conditions. Cornwall’s vibrant identity has evolved over 3,000 years to form a rich, traditional culture, much of which still lives and breathes through the sites and scenery today, offering something for everyone.

Meet The Team

Paul – IT Support Engineer

Paul – Customer Service Manager

Stuart – Satellite Operations Manager

Mary – Technical Support Analyst role

  • How long have you been in this role?

I joined the Avanti team in Goonhilly earlier this year.

  • What are the required qualifications for your role?

My role required qualifications in either Computing or Communications to a Further or Higher education standard. The skills required were varied, including: experience in technical customer support and TCP/IP troubleshooting, alongside knowledge of internet and network protocols.

  • What’s the best thing about working for Avanti?

One of things that impressed me most, was the friendly reception that I received on arrival. My colleagues made me feel very welcome. It’s a great story to be part of; I’m personally very proud that we provide connectivity to some of the remotest parts of the world.

  • What’s the best thing about working at Goonhilly?

The people. Everyone has been extremely patient and generous with their time, willing to share knowledge at every point. There are just so many learning opportunities.

  • What excites you about your future at Goonhilly?

With so much going on at all times, it’s a very exciting company to be a part of. In Goonhilly, our team is growing all the time. With further satellite launches in the pipeline, it’s just a great time to become part of the company.

  • What is the local area like? Did you re-locate or did you live locally?

I had already relocated to the area three years ago. I have three children aged 15, seven and five and an active, outdoor lifestyle suits all three age groups. It has meant that they attend much smaller schools, where they have a great rapport with teachers, classmates and the local community.

  • What would your career advice be to new recruits?

Avanti is a fast-paced, dynamic place to work. New recruits can expect to receive excellent training and support from the team here. I would encourage new joiners to ask lots of questions and just absorb as much as they possibly can in their first few weeks.
